World Association of Social Psychiatry (WASP) Newsletter February 2024
Welcome to the latest edition of the WASP newsletter.
We would really welcome any contributions from sections of WASP and member countries about any news or developments in the world of social psychiatry to share with our friends across all five continents.
Message from Rakesh Chadda, President Elect, WASP
We are about to finish the first year of the WASP EC of 2022-2025 triennium. Though the world has been free of the pandemic in general, the world peace has been affected by two major political conflicts with possible impact on the world peace as well as mental health of the affected populations. We hope for a peaceful solution by initiatives by the likeminded countries.
Recently, India was a host to the G20 meet where heads of 20 countries met to discuss economic collaborations and stability all over the world. A meet on neurosciences, Neuroscience 20 (N20) was organized on 7-8 September 2023 at New Delhi as a parallel event. WASP was represented in the meeting by the President Elect, WASP, who also participated in a panel discussion on suicide prevention.
WASP also presented a symposium “Social Psychiatry and Public Mental Health” in the Diamond Jubilee International Conference on Mental Health on 14-16 September 2023 at Chandigarh. Drs Vincenzo Di Nicola, Rakesh Chadda, Andrew Molodynski, Yasser Khazaal and Roy Abraham Kallivayalil as participants. The symposium was well attended.

The conference had attracted more than 800 delegates from India including about 50 from Europe, USA and Australia.

Secretary General’s report- Andrew Molodynski
While there haven’t been any congresses over the winter period for many, it has been a busy time for WASP overall with work to make sure that some of our processes and financial arrangements are fit and robust going forwards. Not eh kind of thing that excites in a newsletter, so I won’t go into detail, but hopefully important work in the long term.
Much more interesting is the work of the Early Career Section, now much reinvigorated, with its first virtual education and learning seminar. Do have look below for joining details, encourage colleagues to attend, and share widely in your networks. It is on March 11th, is free for everyone, and we couldn’t be off to a better start than having Professor Dinesh Bhugra givingthe first address, with contributions from early career psychiatrists also.
